Alchemically blending traditional Anatolian folk with funk-infused grooves and 70s-inspired psychedelia and soul, the multinational quartet Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek summon a hypnotic sound quite unlike anything else on the current music landscape.
Led by the astonishing German-born Turkish singer and bağlama player Derya Yıldırım, the four piece – which includes French musicians Graham Mushnik (keys) and Antonin Voyant (guitar/bass), along with Berlin-based South African drummer Helen Wells – formed in 2014, earning a reputation for their genre-defying mix of folk, psychedelia, pop, soul and jazz. Drawing on the spirit of their Turkish predecessors, the band’s dreamy saz-funk and psych rock is both powerful and bewitching.
