Sammy Leary & Jeff Hooton @ Ōmiha Folk Club

February 7 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
$20
Sammy Leary breathes life into the forgotten corners of our country’s musical past. A collector and archivist as well as a performer, he unearths the oft-neglected songs that tell the stories of our colonial past. His performances remind us who we once were: settlers, sailors, outsiders and dreamers – so we can better understand who we are today.
As a passionate custodian of New Zealand’s folk tradition, ANZFA kiwiana award winner Sammy proves that our own songs can be as rich, wild and compelling as any in the world.
Jeff Hooton is an accordionist, singer and songwriter who shares his time between Denver, Colorado, where he plays in bands Apolkalypse Now and Paddy Hooligan, and Auckland, where he plays alongside Todd Wright and Marc Colenso in fêted Irish folk-punk band Donnybrook Fair. Jeff is an engaging and extremely likeable performer who has become a great friend of Sammy’s since they first met at the Irish session at the Clare Inn on Dominion Road.
Jeff believes that music is best played with friends, for friends. He will be bringing some of those friends with him to the Ōmiha Memorial Hall to share a section of original songs and much-loved covers with new friends in Rocky Bay.
