SUMMARY:The Mountain Goats @ Powerstation
DESCRIPTION:Live\, The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle\, Peter Hughes\, and Jon Wurster. \nJohn Darnielle is one of the most imaginative lyricists of his generation. Since he sat down cross-legged with an acoustic guitar in front of a boom box and pressed record for the first time – more than a decade ago – skewed characters\, vibrant images and perfectly-framed narratives have flowed in the hundreds. \nThe Mountain Goats released their latest album ‘The Life of the World to Come’ in 2009\, recorded in three studios across three states it features string arrangements by Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy)\, who has also worked in a similar capacity with the varied likes of Arcade Fire\, Fucked Up and the Pet Shop Boys. The Life of the World to Come is their sixth album for 4AD\, and is less a profession of religious faith than an immersion in Biblical poetry and imagery. The songs take their cue from verses that have either informed or inspired them.

SUMMARY:Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek & WAIWHAI @ Double Whammy
DESCRIPTION:Alchemically blending traditional Anatolian folk with funk-infused grooves and 70s-inspired psychedelia and soul\, the multinational quartet Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek summon a hypnotic sound quite unlike anything else on the current music landscape. \nLed by the astonishing German-born Turkish singer and bağlama player Derya Yıldırım\, the four piece – which includes French musicians Graham Mushnik (keys) and Antonin Voyant (guitar/bass)\, along with Berlin-based South African drummer Helen Wells – formed in 2014\, earning a reputation for their genre-defying mix of folk\, psychedelia\, pop\, soul and jazz. Drawing on the spirit of their Turkish predecessors\, the band’s dreamy saz-funk and psych rock is both powerful and bewitching.

SUMMARY:Jolie Holland w/ Steve Abel @ Pitt St. Methodist Church
DESCRIPTION:American folk hero Jolie Holland\, back at last to perform at Pitt Street Methodist Church as a very special intimate duo. Jolie’s connection with Aotearoa runs deep\, recording a recent collaboration with Theia\, and a long-standing friendship and collaboration with Steve Abel. \nOver the span of her career\, Jolie Holland has knotted together a century of American song—jazz\, blues\, soul\, rock and roll—into some stew that is impossible to categorise with any conventional critical terminology.

DESCRIPTION:Dusty Lands are an acoustic folk quartet based in Whangarei. Blending American folk with their unique Northland campfire style\, Dusty Lands invites you to join them for an evening of luscious harmonies\, soulful songwriting\, banjos\, mandolins and resonators. \nThe genesis of the band began with Val and Leah Land\, mother and daughter\, from their roots in the Hokianga where they have been singing round the fire as long as they can remember – hymns\, kapa haka\, waiata\, folk\, pop and more. The last ten years have seen them performing as two thirds of the trio Harmony Couch in slots at folk clubs\, ceilidhs\, Irish pub sessions\, pop-up folk gatherings and the Auckland Folk Festival. \nGary Smyth\, tugboat captain and one of the greatest songwriters to emerge from Northland\, then joined them on stage. Gary is currently working on his debut album inspired by artists like Gregory Alan Isakov and Mandolin Orange. \nRounding out the quartet is Gary’s (distant) cousin\, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dusty Burnell. Winner of the Tui Folk Award twice as a member of both T-Bone and The Frank Burkitt Band\, Dusty is a familiar face on stages throughout Aotearoa. \nDoors open at 6:45. Floor singers first half.

SUMMARY:Music at Midday: Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard
DESCRIPTION:Mark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate\, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well travelled. \nMark Laurent plays the blues like his life depends on it. His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals. It confirms the guitar hero status he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970s. \nBrenda Liddiard has a voice born of true folk\, protest and alt-country sentiments. Brenda has been influenced by English and American acoustic music and found her niche as a songwriter during her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear issues in the 70’s and 80’s. Her album\, Box of Memories\, was a finalist in the 2013 Tui Awards for Best Folk Album. \nFree entry
