SUMMARY:Marcus & Bill @ The Barebones Acoustic Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Marcus and Bill have been playing music as a duo for a number of years. They met as fellow jammers at the Auckland Blues Music Club\, where Bill plays bass and Marcus plays harmonica\, guitar and they both sing. Discovering they both had four string tenor guitars\, they began to play and perform with these together. Subsequently they brought in their other instruments to the duo\, and developed a wide-ranging repertoire including blues\, folk and other genres\, in both acoustic and electric forms. For both of them the words matter\, including that they can be heard\, and they value simple arrangements of music and songs that they come across. For their guest spot they will be concentrating on six-string acoustic guitars and Marcus’s harmonicas.\n\nWarm clothing recommendedDoors open 2.30pmEntry $10.00 cash at the doorNo bar\, so it’s BYOTea/Coffee/Cake at 1/2 time – Gold coin donation please

SUMMARY:Milly Tabak & Dave Khan @ Casita Miro
DESCRIPTION:Milly Tabak\, of Milltones fame\, swaps the grand stages of WOMAD for the intimate chapel of grapes that is Casita Miro. She’s joined by Dave Khan\, long-time lead guitarist for Marlon Williams and key side-man and producer for Reb Fountain. \nMilly and Dave have unbelievable chops and a huge repertoire of the best country songs you’ve never heard before. Khan also brings his exceptional fiddle sound. “The tone of Khan’s violin at Casita will be epic.” says Nick Atkinson “You’re so close to the action you’ll see little clouds of rosin burst from his strings as he bows his well travelled violin. With Milly Tabak at his side they unlock outrageously good sets. They’ll open the winter jazz season with nothing but amazingly hot licks. Come for the embroidered shirts\, stay for knees-up.”

SUMMARY:Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard @ Pah Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Music at Midday:\nMark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard\nMark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate\, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well travelled. \nMark Laurent plays the blues like his life depends on it. His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals. It confirms the guitar hero status he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970s. \nBrenda Liddiard has a voice born of true folk\, protest and alt-country sentiments. Brenda has been influenced by English and American acoustic music and found her niche as a songwriter during her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear issues in the 70’s and 80’s. Her album\, Box of Memories\, was a finalist in the 2013 Tui Awards for Best Folk Album.

SUMMARY:Club Night @ Auckland Bluegrass Club
DESCRIPTION:Club nights are always fun at the Auckland Bluegrass Club. It is the chance for everyone to get out their instruments in front of a sympathetic and encouraging audience. You can try out those new songs you’ve been learning\, or perhaps old favourites you’ve been relearning. \nBetter still\, bluegrass is a social music\, so grab some of the other musicians and form a pop- up band.   Of course\, Old timey\, Western Swing and Americana are all part of the mix. \nAhem\, there will be a short interlude in all the fun for a lightening quick AGM. Don’t worry! No-one gets coopted on to committees without fully informed consent. (Our AGMs are pretty relaxed because we are an informal club rather than an official society.) \nThe Bunker\, Devonport\, Mt Victoria.\nFree entry (gate code #1109*)

SUMMARY:Hannah Morrell @ Rafters Music Club
DESCRIPTION:This month Rafters is excited to welcome Hannah Morrell. Hannah is originally from Lutruwita\, Tasmania and travelled the world in folk\, punk\, and folk-punk bands for 15 years\, before following her heart and landing in Aotearoa. Hannah’s songwriting is rife with humour\, and supported by an undercurrent of serious thoughts about the state of the world. Her rollicking singalong banjo originals and her ability to cram too many words into one song are not to be missed.\n\n\nCome along for a wonderful night of music with Hannah Morrell!\n\n\n\nProgramme\nThe first half of the evening brings musicians old and new to warm us up before supper and our main guest/s. SUMMARY:Gwenifer Raymond @ Public Bar (Whammy)
DESCRIPTION:Touring in support of last year’s critically acclaimed album Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark\, Gwenifer Raymond brings her singular\, spellbinding approach to American primitive guitar to New Zealand for the very first time. \nWidely regarded as one of the great folk guitarists of the 21st century\, Raymond has earned international praise for her raw\, hypnotic instrumentals rooted in Mississippi and Appalachian traditions. Her performances are intense\, intimate\, and utterly transportive — music that feels both ancient and fiercely alive. \nThis Auckland show mark a rare opportunity to experience one of the great contemporary guitarists live.
