SUMMARY:Hannah Morrell @ Rafters Music Club
DESCRIPTION:This month Rafters is excited to welcome Hannah Morrell. Hannah is originally from Lutruwita\, Tasmania and travelled the world in folk\, punk\, and folk-punk bands for 15 years\, before following her heart and landing in Aotearoa. Hannah’s songwriting is rife with humour\, and supported by an undercurrent of serious thoughts about the state of the world. Her rollicking singalong banjo originals and her ability to cram too many words into one song are not to be missed.\n\n\nCome along for a wonderful night of music with Hannah Morrell!\n\n\n\nProgramme\nThe first half of the evening brings musicians old and new to warm us up before supper and our main guest/s. We welcome new performers. See Graham at the door if you want to perform\, but you will need to be there before the 8pm start.

SUMMARY:Club Night @ Auckland Bluegrass Club
DESCRIPTION:Club nights are always fun at the Auckland Bluegrass Club. It is the chance for everyone to get out their instruments in front of a sympathetic and encouraging audience. You can try out those new songs you’ve been learning\, or perhaps old favourites you’ve been relearning. \nBetter still\, bluegrass is a social music\, so grab some of the other musicians and form a pop- up band.   Of course\, Old timey\, Western Swing and Americana are all part of the mix. \nAhem\, there will be a short interlude in all the fun for a lightening quick AGM. Don’t worry! No-one gets coopted on to committees without fully informed consent. (Our AGMs are pretty relaxed because we are an informal club rather than an official society.) \nThe Bunker\, Devonport\, Mt Victoria.\nFree entry (gate code #1109*)

SUMMARY:Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard @ Pah Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Music at Midday:\nMark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard\nMark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate\, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well travelled. \nMark Laurent plays the blues like his life depends on it. His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals. It confirms the guitar hero status he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970s. \nBrenda Liddiard has a voice born of true folk\, protest and alt-country sentiments. Brenda has been influenced by English and American acoustic music and found her niche as a songwriter during her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear issues in the 70’s and 80’s. Her album\, Box of Memories\, was a finalist in the 2013 Tui Awards for Best Folk Album.

SUMMARY:Milly Tabak & Dave Khan @ Casita Miro
DESCRIPTION:Milly Tabak\, of Milltones fame\, swaps the grand stages of WOMAD for the intimate chapel of grapes that is Casita Miro. She’s joined by Dave Khan\, long-time lead guitarist for Marlon Williams and key side-man and producer for Reb Fountain. \nMilly and Dave have unbelievable chops and a huge repertoire of the best country songs you’ve never heard before. Khan also brings his exceptional fiddle sound. “The tone of Khan’s violin at Casita will be epic.” says Nick Atkinson “You’re so close to the action you’ll see little clouds of rosin burst from his strings as he bows his well travelled violin. With Milly Tabak at his side they unlock outrageously good sets. They’ll open the winter jazz season with nothing but amazingly hot licks. Come for the embroidered shirts\, stay for knees-up.”

SUMMARY:Hearth @ The Tuning Fork
DESCRIPTION:After more than a year abroad\, Hearth returns home to Aotearoa celebrating their debut single “Not Gonna Leave You\,” out May 20\, 2026. Years in the making\, this long-awaited release marks a new chapter\, rising at last from the ashes. For their Tāmaki Makaurau stop\, Hearth will be joined onstage by Clara van Wel and Evie Bamford. \nHearth is a theatrical whirlwind of sugar and salt from Te Whanganui-a-Tara\, Aotearoa. Organic\, dynamic\, and heartfelt\, their songs explore love\, lust\, laughter\, and loss with a lyrical honesty that draws listeners in close. Blending elements of folk\, rock\, country\, and jazz\, Hearth creates a sound that is both playful and deeply true\, equal parts cheek and catharsis. Known for their captivating arrangements and expressive delivery\, Hearth balances wit and sincerity with ease. What they lack in seriousness between songs\, they make up for in moments of striking emotional clarity\, weaving stories that linger long after the final note. Since first emerging in 2021\, Hearth has grown and evolved across a range of live settings\, both solo and with a band. They have performed throughout Aotearoa at festivals including CubaDupa\, Newtown Festival\, Twisted Frequency\, Welcome to Nowhere\, and Great Sounds Great. They have also supported artists such as Frank Turner and Avalanche City\, alongside a string of headline shows in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Warm\, whimsical\, and slightly unhinged\, Hearth invites you into their flickering glow. Welcome to the fireside. \n

SUMMARY:Hot Diggity @ Rafters Music Club
DESCRIPTION:It would be almost impossible not to smile and tap your foot to the sweet sounds of New Zealand’s only all-female bluegrass group\, Hot Diggity. The band belts out a mixture of original songs by Heather Carrigan (mandolin\, guitar and vocals) and Deborah Mackenzie (guitar and vocals) along with plenty of bluegrass favourites. Backed up by Jenine Abarbanel (bass and vocals)\, Sue Drake (banjo and vocals) and Louise Evans (fiddle and vocals)\, they put out a powerful\, lively sound with hot instrumentation and tight harmonies.\nThe five Hot Diggity gals hail from throughout the North Island from as far north as sunny Tangowahine down to the heart of Auckland city. Their love of bluegrass means that while the miles might lie between them\, they load up the old wagon – Jenine’s trusty Toyota van which they dream will one day miraculously morph into a shiny red 1960 Holden Special (FB station sedan) – as often as possible for regular gigs and jam sessions.Traditionally bluegrass music has been dominated by guys with moustaches\, sharp suits and hats\, singing songs about being broken-hearted and the odd train. Hot Diggity brings a sparkle of feminine glamour and humour to the genre performing songs about breaking hearts and LOTS of trains… while kitted out in vintage style.\nThe band was formed in 2014\, but all five members are veteran musicians having played with numerous other bands in a variety of musical styles for years. In 2017 they released their debut album\, Worth the Wait.\nCome along for a sparkling night of music with Hot Diggity!\n\n\nProgrammeThe first half of the evening brings musicians old and new to warm us up before supper and our main guest/s. We welcome new performers. See Graham at the door if you want to perform\, but you will need to be there before the 8pm start.

SUMMARY:Auckland Bluegrass Club Concert Night starring Luthiers' Corner
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to have Luthiers’ Corner (Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie) travel up the motu to play a concert for us at The Nix. \nIt was the early ’70’s and two young men more than ten thousand kilometres apart were being influenced by the folk music that became so popular at that time. Both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie became very involved in the music and the construction (and repair!) of the instruments that were used. As it turns out\, their respective universes were not parallel\, but converging. \nCut to 2019 at the Wellington Folk Festival\, both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie had committed to displaying their luthiery work\, and both were taking part in the festival as performers\, Peter with the Madillionaires and Jack with the Downunderdogs. It was there that both men became aware of the others music\, and the potential that existed between them. \nThey decided to try a short stage performance at the 2023 Mid-Winter Holler\, and were well received.  A few gigs later things are developing nicely\, with the occasional appearance of pedal steel guitar and claw-hammer banjo adding to the core element of two guitar arrangements. The repertoire is ever growing with unique arrangements for songs from artists like Guy Clark\, John Prine\, Woody Guthrie and Norman Blake (to name a few). No telling where things might go from here. \nThere won’t be any floor spots this month \n– Tickets: $20 at the door\n– BYO: Instruments and libations
