SUMMARY:Portable Panic Plus @ Titirangi Folk Music Club
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Kilpatrick\, vocals/ bass/whistle and Tony Ricketts\, vocals/guitar/songwriter are PORTABLE PANIC the PLUS is Jude Douglas\, violin/vocals. \nJenny and Tony have been playing music together off and on for decades\, stealing the name Portable Panic from their company. \nTeenage Jenny was introduced to the Wellington folk scene by her big brother\, and was known for singing British Trad. She and Tony were fixtures on the Auckland folk scene  in the nineties and noughties (Easy St\, Tattie Jock etc). In 2012 they moved to Wellington\, where Jenny’s been busy playing bass and singing with The Madillionaires\, The Eagals and The PJs\, among others\, while Tony went quiet for a while. Last year they decided to revive him to give his songs old and new an airing. \nTony was an Auckland singer-songwriter with a penchant for old pop songs. He wrote ‘King of the Roses’  and co-wrote with John Philip ‘Harvest Fields of Cromer’ for the TFMC 20th anniversary songwriting competition. His first group was Easy St. with Chris Price and Kerrin Worsfold before Chris moved to Wellington. Early this century he was part of a Celtic band called Tattie Jock. There have been three albums of his songs. \nJude has played or recorded with a range of musicians including Mike Harding\, Cath Woodman\, Wayne Gillespie\, Chris Priestley\, The Overdogs and Damian Wilkins\, as well as making a CD of fiddle tunes\, including several she composed. She teamed up with Portable Panic last year. \nFloor singers first half.

DESCRIPTION:The shortest day is almost upon us! Ōmiha Folk Club is waking up from its winter hibernation for a midwinter gathering of traditional tunes and storytelling in the spirit of Matariki. Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster. Its reappearance in the midwinter dawn sky marks the beginning of the Māori New Year\, Te Mātahi o te Tau. It is a time of year dedicated to remembering the past\, celebrating the present and looking to the future. \nWe are excited to welcome to the folk club newly formed Irish traditional tunes group The Otherworld\, who are: seanchaí (storyteller) and tin whistle player Mark Russell; Seán Connolly on the uilleann pipes; Andy Lewis on mandolin; Phill Judd (not the one from Split Enz) on guitar and (sometimes) Sammy Leary on concertina. The group will share with us a set of traditional Irish folk tunes that will journey through spirited jigs\, lively reels and meditative airs\, interspersed with retellings of traditional tales\, rememberings and lore. \nAround the world\, midwinter marks a time of reflection\, remembering and reconnecting to one’s roots\, and we would love to invite you to share a song\, story or yarn from your own cultural heritage or your family’s journey. **Floor spots are limited as despite having some pretty mystical folks on the team\, sadly none of us are able to bend time.** \nDoors at 7pm. At the core of their repertoires are Beverley’s British and Irish traditional music and Al’s blues\, but between them they cover a wide range of acoustic and roots styles\, accompanying themselves on a range of instruments that includes guitar\, autoharp\, steel guitar and dulcimer. Beverley and Al have each won NZ Folk Album of the Year awards\, and have performed together and separately at top festivals in New Zealand and Australia\, and at events in England and the United States.

Originally from County Antrim\, Brendan has toured widely across Europe\, taught at major festivals\, and recorded with some of the most respected musicians in Irish music. He is highly regarded as both a performer and educator\, and brings decades of professional experience to his flute teaching.\n\nJohnny Murphy is an accomplished Irish fiddler and master violin maker from Co. Antrim\, deeply rooted in a multi-generational tradition of craftsmanship and music. A fourth-generation luthier\, Johnny builds violins entirely by hand\, combining exceptional technical skill with a finely tuned musical ear developed through years of performance. As a musician\, Johnny has toured internationally with renowned Irish dance productions including Lord of the Dance and Rhythm of the Dance\, and is widely respected for his energetic\, expressive playing. DESCRIPTION:Jeff grew up on the North Shore where he learned to play the accordion as a child. The teenage Jeff realized the guitar to be a more desirable instrument at that time\, but he picked up the accordion again in his 30’s to play a variety of American musical styles while living and working in Denver\, Colorado for over 30 years. During that time\, he also played the upright bass for the Aurora Symphony in Denver and other various other ensembles. Since returning to Auckland\, he has formed the band Donnybrook Fair with Todd Wright\, still playing the same accordion that his mother bought for him when he was 10 years old.Jeff believes music is best played with friends\, for friends.
