SUMMARY:Club Night @ Auckland Bluegrass Club
DESCRIPTION:Club nights are always fun at the Auckland Bluegrass Club. It is the chance for everyone to get out their instruments in front of a sympathetic and encouraging audience. You can try out those new songs you’ve been learning\, or perhaps old favourites you’ve been relearning. \nBetter still\, bluegrass is a social music\, so grab some of the other musicians and form a pop- up band.   Of course\, Old timey\, Western Swing and Americana are all part of the mix. \nAhem\, there will be a short interlude in all the fun for a lightening quick AGM. Don’t worry! No-one gets coopted on to committees without fully informed consent. (Our AGMs are pretty relaxed because we are an informal club rather than an official society.) \nThe Bunker\, Devonport\, Mt Victoria.\nFree entry (gate code #1109*)

SUMMARY:Milly Tabak & Dave Khan @ Casita Miro
DESCRIPTION:Milly Tabak\, of Milltones fame\, swaps the grand stages of WOMAD for the intimate chapel of grapes that is Casita Miro. She’s joined by Dave Khan\, long-time lead guitarist for Marlon Williams and key side-man and producer for Reb Fountain. \nMilly and Dave have unbelievable chops and a huge repertoire of the best country songs you’ve never heard before. Khan also brings his exceptional fiddle sound. “The tone of Khan’s violin at Casita will be epic.” says Nick Atkinson “You’re so close to the action you’ll see little clouds of rosin burst from his strings as he bows his well travelled violin. With Milly Tabak at his side they unlock outrageously good sets. They’ll open the winter jazz season with nothing but amazingly hot licks. Come for the embroidered shirts\, stay for knees-up.”

SUMMARY:Rainberry Pie @ The Bunker
DESCRIPTION:The core of Rainberry Pie is the sometimes edgy\, sometimes dulcet\, and always enchanting vocal harmonies of Deborah Mackenzie and Micheal Young. The vocals are backed up by a well defined acoustic instrumental groove. Not willing to be constrained to a narrow genre\, Rainberry Pie explores many acoustic styles from alt-country\, western swing\, bluegrass\, and pop\, all while maintaining a cohesive and distinctive Rainberry sound. Deborah plays percussion. Micheal plays guitar. David Blackman provides tasty fills on fiddle and mandolin while Cathy Dyer lays down a solid foundation on double bass.\n\n\nThere will be floor singers in the first half of the night. Rainberry Pie will perform in the second half.

SUMMARY:Hearth @ The Tuning Fork
DESCRIPTION:After more than a year abroad\, Hearth returns home to Aotearoa celebrating their debut single “Not Gonna Leave You\,” out May 20\, 2026. Years in the making\, this long-awaited release marks a new chapter\, rising at last from the ashes. For their Tāmaki Makaurau stop\, Hearth will be joined onstage by Clara van Wel and Evie Bamford. \nHearth is a theatrical whirlwind of sugar and salt from Te Whanganui-a-Tara\, Aotearoa. Organic\, dynamic\, and heartfelt\, their songs explore love\, lust\, laughter\, and loss with a lyrical honesty that draws listeners in close. Blending elements of folk\, rock\, country\, and jazz\, Hearth creates a sound that is both playful and deeply true\, equal parts cheek and catharsis. Known for their captivating arrangements and expressive delivery\, Hearth balances wit and sincerity with ease. What they lack in seriousness between songs\, they make up for in moments of striking emotional clarity\, weaving stories that linger long after the final note. Since first emerging in 2021\, Hearth has grown and evolved across a range of live settings\, both solo and with a band. They have performed throughout Aotearoa at festivals including CubaDupa\, Newtown Festival\, Twisted Frequency\, Welcome to Nowhere\, and Great Sounds Great. They have also supported artists such as Frank Turner and Avalanche City\, alongside a string of headline shows in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Warm\, whimsical\, and slightly unhinged\, Hearth invites you into their flickering glow. Welcome to the fireside. \n

SUMMARY:Fats White\, Appaloosa Willie & Solomon Cole @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:The folk club kicks off the season with something a little different from our usual fare: a one-night only special edition of weird folk\, country\, and blues\, hosted by the irrepressible Sammy Leary and featuring local legends Fats White\, Appaloosa Willie\, and Solomon Cole.\n\nFats White is a celebrated icon of the Aotearoa underground and an extraordinary multimedia artist long revered by the old guard of the Auckland music scene. Fats\, who has described himself as “a persimmon-eater living in the seasons of a pretty complicated world\,” performs self-penned songs on the ukulele that resist classification\, but could be considered part punk\, part outsider folk\, and all carnivalesque showmanship. His work seems to spring from a deep well of primal weirdness\, and those who appreciate the weirder side of folk will recognise the dark humour and surreal artistry in his work\, which has been likened to a cross between Captain Beefheart\, Jim Morrison\, and Tom Waits.\n\nGerry Moran\, aka Appaloosa Willie\, plays outlaw country with a sound that recalls the greats from Hank Williams to Hasil Adkins\, but as an island dwelling bushman\, he doesn’t seek to imitate. Think slide guitar played through a blown-out amp on a Rocky Bay front porch and a style characterised by an irreverent\, anti-establishment attitude\, hard-living lyrics and rhythms like boots on a wooden floor.\n\nSolomon Cole is a genre-defying blues artist known for a sound that embraces the spirit of Howlin’ Wolf and owes a debt to the great Mississippi bluesmen Son House and R.L. Burnside. Cole’s career has been built on soul-drenched storytelling and primal\, foot-stomping blues. Fans can expect a back-to-basics\, (mostly) unplugged performance folk club appearance\, featuring Facu Fuentes on percussion and backup vocals from the talented Nikki Ngātai.\nThis is an all ages\, all walks of life-friendly show!\n\nThis year\, the folk club have dedicated 10% of the season’s proceeds to Ngā Purapura Akoranga\, Waiheke Island’s reorua / bilingual unit at Te Huruhi Primary School\, who do amazing mahi nurturing young te reo speakers in our community.
