SUMMARY:Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard @ Pah Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Music at Midday:\nMark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard\nMark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate\, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well travelled. \nMark Laurent plays the blues like his life depends on it. His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals. It confirms the guitar hero status he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970s. \nBrenda Liddiard has a voice born of true folk\, protest and alt-country sentiments. Brenda has been influenced by English and American acoustic music and found her niche as a songwriter during her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear issues in the 70’s and 80’s. Her album\, Box of Memories\, was a finalist in the 2013 Tui Awards for Best Folk Album.

SUMMARY:Celtic Ferret @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world where history doesn’t just sit quietly—it belts out tunes and demands a singalong. \nRaiding centuries-old ballads full of rogues\, romance\, and questionable life choices\, Celtic Ferret have firmly planted themselves in the New Zealand folk scene\, popping up at clubs and festivals like musical mischief-makers. \nTheir sound is powered by a frankly suspicious number of instruments—guitar\, mandolin\, flutes\, whistles\, and whatever else they tripped over on the way out the door. \nTo celebrate the season\, Jean and Ian have dusted off a mix of crowd favourites and “oh yeah\, that one!” songs for May Day—so expect a bit of everything\, from the well-loved to the surprising. \nAnd yes\, they will be playing songs you know\, so warm up those vocal cords—it’s not a concert\, it’s a group effort. \nLast seen running amok at ECFC in 2023\, the Ferrets are back and ready to once again raise the roof (and possibly a few eyebrows) with their friends at East Coast Folk Club. \nCasual performers 1st half with featured guest in the 2nd half.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Reid & Paul Brown @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance featuring Jennifer Reid and Paul Brown trading ballads and broadsides to illustrate the shared cultures of Lancashire and Dundee\, and the song traditions that would have been active in the two cities during the Industrial Revolution. \nLancashire dialect folk singer and broadside balladeer Jennifer Reid moves between worlds with ease. Rooted in archives and oral histories\, her work braids nineteenth-century music with the present: teaching\, performing\, researching\, sharing\, advocating and supporting spaces for memory and making in the tradition. \nThe singer\, who has been described as having irreverent puckish vim\, has worked with industry greats John Cooper Clarke\, Eliza Carthy\, and Shane Meadows amongst others\, and studied at Oxford University\, specialising in the ballad collections of Manchester. Her research has taken her from Venice to Dhaka via New York\, where she asked whether the Industrial Revolution ever really ended. She has spoken on weaving songs in Bangladesh and Manchester\, worked with scientists\, poets\, musicians\, historians and universities and still finds time to sing stories that refuse to be forgotten. \nJennifer is joined by special guest Dundonian folk singer and legend of the Auckland folk scene Paul Brown. Says Jenn of Paul: Paul Brown’s style is brash\, unapologetic and historically accurate. A vocal Scotsman is needed in most every music scene and I’m pleased that Aotearoa can boast of him\, for he is certainly a firebrand and he knows his stuff. \nTo the devotee of union and work song\, Paul Brown is a master of the form. His songs are powerfully moving\, anti war and anti authoritarian\, and his Dundee accent is a pleasure to listen to. Paul comes from a line of strong Dundonian women; so has a direct connection to the nimble-fingered\, hard working\, hard drinking ‘mill lassies’\, who feature prominently in his repertoire. \nPaul believes in celebrating the working classes and using the power of song to change the system. Hel sings with his audience\, not at them\, so singing choruses is compulsory! \nPlease note we do not have eftpos facilities. BYO event.

Penni has recently made a return to the folk scene after a few years’ absence. Some of you will remember her folk-punk trio Siren (part of the Auckland Acoustics collective) back in the day. She has recorded with Mike Harding\, Kath Tait and Mahinaarangi Tocker\, guested at several NZ folk festivals\, and toured the North Island extensively in the 2010s in an Americana duo. In the last couple of years she has appeared at the inaugural Raglan Blues Festival\, had a one-woman show in the Hamilton Arts Festival\, and toured the local folk and house concert circuit in a double bill with WilkieMac.Seeing many of her song choices in the last year or two appeared to resonate with current issues\, she decided to lean into this theme and has been researching protest songs old and new. Penni now has a feisty collection of such numbers running from the mid 17th century to the 2020s. This Rafters spot will include selections from contemporary folk and her original songs\, along with a few of these protest folk-songs (yes\, there will be choruses to join in on!).Penni will be accompanied by guitarist Stan Jagger. In the early 2000s Stan was sideman to folk guitarist/songwriter Chris Thompson\, but as a stalwart of Hamilton’s indie music scene he’s more usually found playing everything from surf guitar\, to dreampop\, to Eastern European gypsy music. He’s starting to get this folk music bug though!ProgrammeThe first half of the evening brings musicians old and new to warm us up before supper and our main guest/s. See Graham at the door if you want to perform\, but you will need to be there before the 8pm start.

SUMMARY:Mark & Brenda\, Music at Midday @ Pah Homestead
DESCRIPTION:For three decades Mark Laurent and Brenda Liddiard have been performing together – ‘indie’ musicians who fly just below the commercial radar\, playing grass-roots\, mostly un-plugged music throughout New Zealand\, Australia and the UK. \nMark plays the blues like his life depends on it! His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals and confirms the guitar hero status that he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970’s. \nBrenda Liddiard has a voice born of folk\, protest and alt country sentiments. Mark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate\, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well traveled.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Reid @ Rocky Bay Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Bay Folk Club are thrilled to present ethnomusicologist and performer of 19th century Lancashire dialect and Victorian street ballads\, Jennifer Reid.\n\nFolk music has lost its way\, and people have lost track of their geographical heritage. The working classes made music as a provocation and this is a tradition Jennifer continues: think rousing songs and passionate oratory.\nThe singer and researcher began her career volunteering at Cheatham Library and the Working Class Movement Library in Manchester. Following this time Jennifer completed an advanced diploma in Local History at Oxford University.\nShe researches 19th century music to educate students from primary to university level; perform the songs and stories live; develop talks\, seminars and traditional craft workshops for history and community groups; and contribute academically to the field with funded research and artistic projects.\n\nHer work has taken her to Venice\, Croatia\, New York and lately Bangladesh\, where she tested the idea that the Industrial Revolution never stopped\, it just moved to Dhaka. She spoke at the first ethnomusicology conference on the Indian sub-continent about her research into Bangladeshi and Mancunian weaving songs.\nJennifer has recently supported Eliza Carthy\, John Cooper Clarke\, and Pulp\, and in April brings her one-woman show to Auckland.\n\nTickets $20 via undertheradar or can be booked in advance by emailing rbfcwaiheke@gmail.com\, regretfully we cannot respond to emails and messages sent on the same day as the event.
