SUMMARY:Niko Ne Zna @ The Dalmatian Cultural Society
DESCRIPTION:Niko Ne Zna Return to Auckland with Unforgettable Balkan Brass Celebration \nWellington-based 9-piece Balkan brass band Niko Ne Zna return to Auckland for a night of rhythm\, melody\, and celebration at the Dalmatian Cultural Society on Saturday 11 April. \nCombining driving rhythms\, melodic brass\, and captivating multilingual vocals\, the ensemble has firmly established itself as one of New Zealand’s premier world music acts. Drawing inspiration from the rich musical traditions of the Balkans\, Niko Ne Zna creates performances filled with hypnotic melodies\, infectious grooves\, and irresistible energy. \nBased in Wellington — New Zealand’s creative and cultural capital — all nine members are formidable instrumentalists and composers. Their distinctive lineup features two trumpets\, soprano saxophone\, bass and tenor trombones\, sousaphone\, Balkan bass drum (tapan)\, and snare drum\, creating a powerful and immersive sonic experience unlike anything else on the local music scene. \nVocalist and percussionist Nikkie Rich leads the band’s dynamic stage presence\, moving effortlessly between languages and musical traditions while driving the connection between performers and audience. \nOver more than a decade of performances\, Niko Ne Zna have become renowned for their electrifying live shows — blending choreographed movement\, theatrical flair\, and spontaneous musical moments that transform concerts into shared celebrations. Whether performing on festival stages\, touring nationally\, or playing sold-out shows in Australia\, the band’s mission remains the same: bringing people of all walks of life together through music and dance. \nHighlights include standout performances at the internationally recognised WOMAD New Zealand festival and featured original music in the acclaimed film What We Do in the Shadows. \nFollowing an unforgettable previous Auckland appearance\, the band’s return promises another night of joyous connection\, soaring horns\, and a dance floor that won’t stay still. A cash bar will be available\, and traditional Balkan food and drinks will be served\, making this a full night of music\, celebration\, and culture. \n

The integration of these tonal\, rhythmic and harmonic lineages\, are found in her original compositions\, and in her facilitation of workshops and ensembles. She led the Medena Ensemble through the World Choir Games and collaborations in Bulgaria\, and continues to offer workshops in communities\, festivals and establishments\, often taking traditional material into improvisational realms\, with a particular affinity for polyphony and interesting rhythms.
