DESCRIPTION:Come and cozy up with a warm drink\, a meal\, sweet treat and/or glass of wine and enjoy the folky/jazzy/gypsy/world music sounds of this rare collaboration between pianist Ben Fernandez and the Sonia & Nigel duo. \nSonia & Nigel duo \nSonia & Nigel are a multi-cultural acoustic duo featuring French-American Paris-born Sonia Wilson on vocals & ukulele and Kiwi-American virtuoso musician Nigel Gavin on 7-string guitar. They weave French\, Kiwi and American songs with their own original compositions and inspiration from their travels around the world. After meeting and playing together for the first time at a folk festival during Sonia’s first visit to New Zealand on a solo round-the-world trip in December 2014\, the pair have since become a well-loved duo in the New Zealand music scene and beyond – sharing songs as a vehicle for peace\, joy\, healing and community-building; celebrating beauty\, love and ecology through music. \nBenedict (Ben) Fernandez \nBen Fernandez is a classically trained jazz pianist\, composer and arranger. He has a Masters’ Degree in Music majoring in Jazz performance from the University of Auckland. He also has degrees in Physics\, Computer Science and Business Management. Ben has performed at concerts and events in over 25 countries and is an award-winning composer for jingles\, TV shows and short films. He has released 10 Albums of his music here in NZ. Ben is also an educator and teaches music at schools and colleges in Auckland. He conducts regular workshops on improvisation in New Zealand and overseas. DESCRIPTION:Aotearoa’s premier Bulgarian Folklore Vocal Ensemble\, lead by Tui Mamaki\, returns – offering a fresh collection of ancient melodies gathered on their recent trip to Bulgaria\, with exquisite acapella arrangements\, crafted for their unique blend of women’s voices.\n\nFull Circle is the culmination of an important year of mahi\, which saw the ensemble travel to Bulgaria for the first time together\, to perform at the famed Koprivshtitsa Festival in collaboration with Yasna Voices from New York\, and to study with some of the country’s finest folklore keepers and vocalists.\n\nThis concert will be an offering of livings songs\, learnt in the living rooms\, chitalishte (community halls)\, and on the mountain tops of Bulgaria. It is the culmination of a journey to the source. A vibrant feminine tapestry of traditional Bulgarian song\, where classic folklore choral arrangements rub shoulders with rural treasures.\n\nWe invite you to celebrate with us at Tāmaki Makaurau’s beautiful Unitarian Church in Ponsonby\, where voices make the wood sing\, on Sunday 21 June\, winter Solstice.\n\nWho are Medena Ensemble?\nBe it through classic folklore choir arrangements or obscure rural treasure songs issue of Tui Mamaki’s long standing love affair with Bulgaria and its phenomenal voices\, this ensemble explore that compelling vocal tone\, that bewitchingly close harmony\, those playful odd-meter rhythms and the colourful feminine fabric of a devoted community blend.
