SUMMARY:Penni Feather & Stan Jagger @ Rafters Music Club
DESCRIPTION:Known for her soulful interpretations and vocal range\, Penni has performed in a variety of genres\, but is always drawn back to folk and acoustic – particularly blues and English trad. Penni has recently made a return to the folk scene after a few years’ absence. Some of you will remember her folk-punk trio Siren (part of the Auckland Acoustics collective) back in the day. She has recorded with Mike Harding\, Kath Tait and Mahinaarangi Tocker\, guested at several NZ folk festivals\, and toured the North Island extensively in the 2010s in an Americana duo. In the last couple of years she has appeared at the inaugural Raglan Blues Festival\, had a one-woman show in the Hamilton Arts Festival\, and toured the local folk and house concert circuit in a double bill with WilkieMac.Seeing many of her song choices in the last year or two appeared to resonate with current issues\, she decided to lean into this theme and has been researching protest songs old and new. Penni now has a feisty collection of such numbers running from the mid 17th century to the 2020s. This Rafters spot will include selections from contemporary folk and her original songs\, along with a few of these protest folk-songs (yes\, there will be choruses to join in on!).Penni will be accompanied by guitarist Stan Jagger. In the early 2000s Stan was sideman to folk guitarist/songwriter Chris Thompson\, but as a stalwart of Hamilton’s indie music scene he’s more usually found playing everything from surf guitar\, to dreampop\, to Eastern European gypsy music. He’s starting to get this folk music bug though!ProgrammeThe first half of the evening brings musicians old and new to warm us up before supper and our main guest/s. DESCRIPTION:Dusty Lands are an acoustic folk quartet based in Whangarei. Blending American folk with their unique Northland campfire style\, Dusty Lands invites you to join them for an evening of luscious harmonies\, soulful songwriting\, banjos\, mandolins and resonators. \nThe genesis of the band began with Val and Leah Land\, mother and daughter\, from their roots in the Hokianga where they have been singing round the fire as long as they can remember – hymns\, kapa haka\, waiata\, folk\, pop and more. The last ten years have seen them performing as two thirds of the trio Harmony Couch in slots at folk clubs\, ceilidhs\, Irish pub sessions\, pop-up folk gatherings and the Auckland Folk Festival. \nGary Smyth\, tugboat captain and one of the greatest songwriters to emerge from Northland\, then joined them on stage. Gary is currently working on his debut album inspired by artists like Gregory Alan Isakov and Mandolin Orange. \nRounding out the quartet is Gary’s (distant) cousin\, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dusty Burnell. Winner of the Tui Folk Award twice as a member of both T-Bone and The Frank Burkitt Band\, Dusty is a familiar face on stages throughout Aotearoa. \nDoors open at 6:45. Floor singers first half.

You’ll also get a light supper\, a musical item from queer folk band Moon Goose\, and a queer folk tale shared by a special guest.\n\nTickets from events.humanitix.com/pride-ceilidh General / Waged – $25 Concession / Unwaged – $10 Kids under 12 – free\n\nThe evening is open to people of all backgrounds\, genders\, and ages; the early start time makes it easy for everyone from rangatahi to elders to join in. Dances early in the evening should be especially suitable for tamariki and beginners\, with some opportunities for fast movers to let loose on the dance floor as the evening goes on.\n\nOur organising team are all tangata tiriti with long-standing connections in the Aotearoa folk scene.
