SUMMARY:Hot Diggity @ The Rova Sound Stage\, Auckland Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:It would be almost impossible not to smile and tap your foot to the sweet sounds of New Zealand’s only all-female bluegrass group\, Hot Diggity. Catch them at the Auckland Arts Festival’s Rova Sounds Stage! \nTraditionally bluegrass music has been dominated by guys with moustaches\, sharp suits and hats\, singing songs about being broken-hearted and the odd train. Hot Diggity brings a sparkle of feminine glamour and humour to the genre performing songs about breaking hearts and LOTS of trains… while kitted out in vintage style.

SUMMARY:Auckland Bluegrass Club Concert Night starring Luthiers' Corner
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to have Luthiers’ Corner (Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie) travel up the motu to play a concert for us at The Nix. \nIt was the early ’70’s and two young men more than ten thousand kilometres apart were being influenced by the folk music that became so popular at that time. Both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie became very involved in the music and the construction (and repair!) of the instruments that were used. As it turns out\, their respective universes were not parallel\, but converging. \nCut to 2019 at the Wellington Folk Festival\, both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie had committed to displaying their luthiery work\, and both were taking part in the festival as performers\, Peter with the Madillionaires and Jack with the Downunderdogs. It was there that both men became aware of the others music\, and the potential that existed between them. \nThey decided to try a short stage performance at the 2023 Mid-Winter Holler\, and were well received.  A few gigs later things are developing nicely\, with the occasional appearance of pedal steel guitar and claw-hammer banjo adding to the core element of two guitar arrangements. The repertoire is ever growing with unique arrangements for songs from artists like Guy Clark\, John Prine\, Woody Guthrie and Norman Blake (to name a few). No telling where things might go from here. \nThere won’t be any floor spots this month \n– Tickets: $20 at the door\n– BYO: Instruments and libations

SUMMARY:Jennifer Reid & Paul Brown @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance featuring Jennifer Reid and Paul Brown trading ballads and broadsides to illustrate the shared cultures of Lancashire and Dundee\, and the song traditions that would have been active in the two cities during the Industrial Revolution. \nLancashire dialect folk singer and broadside balladeer Jennifer Reid moves between worlds with ease. Rooted in archives and oral histories\, her work braids nineteenth-century music with the present: teaching\, performing\, researching\, sharing\, advocating and supporting spaces for memory and making in the tradition. \nThe singer\, who has been described as having irreverent puckish vim\, has worked with industry greats John Cooper Clarke\, Eliza Carthy\, and Shane Meadows amongst others\, and studied at Oxford University\, specialising in the ballad collections of Manchester. Her research has taken her from Venice to Dhaka via New York\, where she asked whether the Industrial Revolution ever really ended. She has spoken on weaving songs in Bangladesh and Manchester\, worked with scientists\, poets\, musicians\, historians and universities and still finds time to sing stories that refuse to be forgotten. \nJennifer is joined by special guest Dundonian folk singer and legend of the Auckland folk scene Paul Brown. Says Jenn of Paul: Paul Brown’s style is brash\, unapologetic and historically accurate. A vocal Scotsman is needed in most every music scene and I’m pleased that Aotearoa can boast of him\, for he is certainly a firebrand and he knows his stuff. \nTo the devotee of union and work song\, Paul Brown is a master of the form. His songs are powerfully moving\, anti war and anti authoritarian\, and his Dundee accent is a pleasure to listen to. Paul comes from a line of strong Dundonian women; so has a direct connection to the nimble-fingered\, hard working\, hard drinking ‘mill lassies’\, who feature prominently in his repertoire. \nPaul believes in celebrating the working classes and using the power of song to change the system. Hel sings with his audience\, not at them\, so singing choruses is compulsory! \nPlease note we do not have eftpos facilities. BYO event.
