SUMMARY:Fables @ Cupid Bar
DESCRIPTION:FABLES – FULL BAND LIVE AT CUPID BAR\nWith support from Mali Mali \nFables celebrate the release of their debut album ‘Change is a slow moving beast’ hitting #2 in the Aotearoa Album charts. Known for their lush\, cinematic folk and intimate storytelling\, Fables bring their signature warmth and depth to calm any storm\, bear witness to this intimate full-band performance at Cupid Bar. \nIf you’ve ever needed a reason to slow down and just breathe\, Fables has provided the perfect soundtrack. Fronted by the immense talent of Jess Bailey and backed by a revolving cast of Tāmaki Makaurau’s finest\, their debut album Change Is A Slow Moving Beast is exactly what the title suggests\, a patient\, evolving creature that demands you sit still and listen.\nMusic NZ Review: https://www.muzic.nz/reviews/album-review-change-is-a-slow-moving-beast/ \nJoined by special guest Mali Mali\nIn the often impossibly fast-moving world of new music\, it’s a true gasp of fresh mountain air to enjoy the return of one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s finest purveyors of intentional slowness. Critics such as Elsewhere’s Graham Reid celebrate Tolich for being “uncompromisingly true to his style”\, and Radio New Zealand’s Nick Bollinger revels in the “vulnerable\, unaffected” Mali Mali sound; an intuitive blend of indie folk\, ambient\, and experimental songwriting. — an unmissable showcase! \nMali Mali – Croatia: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day \n \nTickets: $20 presale / $25 door\nVinyl available for purchase at the door

The most recent\, Caution 15\, was a finalist in the Aotearoa New Zealand Folk Alliance folk album of the year awards for 2024.\n\nall tickets $20NO EFTPOS.

SUMMARY:Music at Midday: Sarah Marlowe Spence @ Pah Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Marlowe Spence is a singer songwriter with a varied repertoire. With a folk-classical voice\, her music is at times a deep reflection on life and experience yet can include humorous narratives on failed relationships. \nSarah has classical voice training and after a music paper at university\, she started playing guitar and writing songs. Sarah lived overseas for some time and spent time living in a yoga retreat and study centre. This influenced her music to include a Sanskrit repertoire which she also shares on occasion accompanying yoga classes with music and in group singing events at places such as yoga studios.

SUMMARY:Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 @ Auckland Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Seun Kuti is a Nigerian musician\, singer\, and songwriter renowned for his captivating performances and socially conscious music. He is the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. Seun has spent most of his life preserving and extending his father’s political and musical legacy as the leader of his father’s former band Egypt 80. As a developing saxophonist and percussionist\, he entered the formal ranks of the band before he was 12. In 1997 when Fela passed\, in fulfilment of his father’s wishes\, Seun assumed the mantle as head of Egypt 80 and he has run it ever since. As a musician and pan-African activist\, Seun has been involved in a number of campaigns in recent years\, including #OccupyNigeria and #EndSARS – a social movement against police brutality in Nigeria. Significantly\, he’s revived the Movement of the People (M.O.P.)\, the political party his father set up in 1979\, which was quashed by the military government not long after Fela’s failed presidential bid. \nDuring his career\, Seun Kuti released other 4 albums with Egypt 80: ‘Many Things’ (2008)\, ‘From Africa with Fury: Rise for Knitting Factory Records’ (2011)\, coproduced by Brian Eno and John Reynolds\, ‘A Long Way Beginning’ (2014) and the Grammy nominated ‘Black Times’ (2018) that included a feature from Carlos Santana. He also released numerous EPs. In 2022\, Seun Kuti joined forces with Roots frontman and MC extraordinaire Black Thought in the EP ‘African Dreams’. In 2023\, he collaborated on Janelle Monae’s ‘The Age of Pleasure’ (Grammy nominee for Album Of The Year) with the two singles ‘Float’; and ‘Knows Better’;\, teamed up with Talib Kweli and MadLib for their album‘Liberation 2’ on the song ‘Nat Turner’ featuring Cassper Nyovest and released a new version of the single ‘Bad Man Lighter’ with Black Thought\, featuring Vic Mensa. \nSeun Kuti has started a side project\, which looks to Afrobeats music\, with his alter ego BigBird\, together with Nigerian rapper Vector\, releasing the singles “OOP (S)” with Odumodublvck and “The Matter”
