SUMMARY:C. Zukey\, Luke Hurley & Hoop @ Ministry of Folk
DESCRIPTION:An exciting line-up for The Ministry of Folk in February!\nBring your own drinks and snacks\, grab a table and settle down for a night of magic.\n\nC.Zukey is originally from Canada and MOF first became aware of his wonderful talents back 2012 when his band was Farah Loux. He’s back with a sparkling\, lush\, warm and heartfelt album “Stone Fruut” produced by acclaimed New Zealand producer Mark Perkins.\n\nKiwi music legend Luke Hurley was once described as “New Zealand’s best unknown musician”. He’s influenced by the likes of Paul Simon\, Neil Young\, Joni Mitchell\, John Renbourne\, Bert Jansch\, Jimi Hendrix\, Richie Blackmore and Robert Johnson. The Christchurch Star famously said “If Bob Dylan could play the guitar and sing… he would be Luke Hurley”. Luke now lives in Auckland and his current style of playing been described as “Indian tabla meets Irish rock”. According to Liz Barry: “Lukes style captivates the listener with gentle melodies\, exquisite guitar technique and simple yet sometimes complex rhythms.”\n\nMOF hosts\, Hoop will deck the hall and kick things off with their acoustic pop songs featuring harmonious touches of fiddle\, banjo and flute.

SUMMARY:Musical Sound Journey @ Arataki Visitor Centre
DESCRIPTION:Relax on the deck enjoying views over the beautiful Waitākere forest while listening to the sonic landscapes of musicians Matt Reece and John Goudge. \nHaving grown up in or around the West Auckland bush\, Matt and John find inspiration in the trees\, beaches\, and rugged hills. They often include native bird song and the sounds of nature in their musical compositions\, along with traditional Māori instruments. Their one-hour journey through air\, earth\, water\, fire\, and ether encompasses a mixture of original ambient world music\, song\, and chill-out beats. \nThey invite you to stretch out with your ears. If you choose\, you might want to move\, or dance in your own way. And there are beautiful carvings\, displays and artworks of the visitor centre to enjoy while you are listening. \nThis is an intimate event where seats are limited. Booking is essential. \nIf it’s raining the event will be indoors. Please arrive early to get yourself settled before the programme starts. \nMatt Reece is a long-time student of world instruments\, including overtone flutes\, kalimba\, ngoni (African harp)\, taonga puoro (traditional Māori instruments)\, didgeridoo\, and percussion. \nJohn Goudge has been a singer/songwriter\, composer\, and musical director for nearly four decades. As part of Musical Sound Journey\, he fuses sound effects\, synthesizers\, guitars\, and voice with world music.

SUMMARY:Sacred Harp Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Harp is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in New England and was later perpetuated and carried on in the American South. The name is derived from The Sacred Harp\, a ubiquitous and historically important tune book printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844\, and revised editions are still used today in pockets of the South where “Sacred Harp singings” are an unbroken tradition\, and by people across the country who have come to the tradition in the last couple of decades. Nowadays there are many thriving groups of singers across the world\, particularly in the UK\, Ireland and Europe. \nThe new singers observe the practices of southern Sacred Harp groups. The four parts tenor\, bass\, alto\, and treble—face each other to form a “hollow square.” Each singer has a chance to “lead” by standing in the center of the square\, selecting a song or set of songs\, and beating the tempo with up-and-down strokes of the arm. These singings often go on all day and are followed by a shared dinner – though we won’t be going for that long\, this time at least! \nSacred Harp singers can be of many different faiths or none\, but the practice is considered a deeply spiritual experience for many. The workshop is suitable for singers of all levels\, and the more the merrier\, so please bring a friend! We will be guided by visiting singers Inga and Derek Buckland from Bremen\, who will share with us some of the history and the singing of scales and songs. We will follow with a potluck shared lunch. Please join us for what will no doubt be a lovely gathering at the hall with it’s wonderful acoustics! Koha entry as a donation to the OWRS.
