SUMMARY:Ihi. Wehi. Mana. @ Auckland Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Ihi. Wehi. Mana. aptly describes the emotions that will be evoked with this celebratory event featuring Te Waka Huia & Karen Grylls (CNZM).\nFor 40 years Te Waka Huia has competed on the national kapa haka stage\, winning the prestigious national title five times. 2026 marks 45 years of dedication from this kapa to Māori performing arts\, singing\, music\, entertaining\, educating and representing Aotearoa globally. \nPast and present members of Te Waka Huia reunite with esteemed choral leader Karen Grylls\, who has led the relationship with Te Waka Huia and the national choirs over the past decades. The 1996 performance of Kua Rongo with the National Youth Choir and Te Waka Huia in the Sydney Opera House was the beginning of that journey. Together with a bespoke invitational choir\, this performance features waiata that combine te reo with vocal talent\, in an uplifting celebration of musical collaboration and cultural connection.

SUMMARY:Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek & WAIWHAI @ Double Whammy
DESCRIPTION:Alchemically blending traditional Anatolian folk with funk-infused grooves and 70s-inspired psychedelia and soul\, the multinational quartet Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek summon a hypnotic sound quite unlike anything else on the current music landscape. \nLed by the astonishing German-born Turkish singer and bağlama player Derya Yıldırım\, the four piece – which includes French musicians Graham Mushnik (keys) and Antonin Voyant (guitar/bass)\, along with Berlin-based South African drummer Helen Wells – formed in 2014\, earning a reputation for their genre-defying mix of folk\, psychedelia\, pop\, soul and jazz. Drawing on the spirit of their Turkish predecessors\, the band’s dreamy saz-funk and psych rock is both powerful and bewitching.

SUMMARY:You\, Me\, Everybody @ Whangateau Hall
DESCRIPTION:Aotearoa’s bluegrass explorers\, You\, Me\, Everybody\, bring their new album\, Midnight to The Whangateau Hall.\nRooted in tradition but unafraid to innovate\, the band blends virtuosic musicianship with gracious arrangements to create a progressive acoustic sound that reaches well beyond classic Americana. Their live shows offer plenty of toe-tapping energy\, yet it’s their creative fearlessness\, soaring dynamics and heartfelt storytelling that truly set them apart.\n\nThe band’s new album\, Midnight—recorded in Wellington with Nashville-based producer Rachel Baiman and mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Sullivan—marks a bold evolution in their sound. Exploring the space between endings and beginnings\, the record pairs emotional depth with dynamic\, contemporary acoustic textures. With singles arriving throughout 2025\, You\, Me\, Everybody now support the release of the album with a national tour of Aotearoa.\n\nEmail whangateaufolk@gmail.com to book your seat.

DESCRIPTION:Bulgarian Vocal Workshop with Tui Mamaki \nFreshly returned from the homeland of that exquisite vocal music\, Medena Ensemble continues to integrate new repertoire towards a Full Circle Concert on 7 June 2026.  Ever wanted to sing with other women enamoured with Bulgarian Folklore? Join us for a day\, to learn “Mwri Tudoro\, Tudoro”\, a beautifully ornamented song from Rodopi Mountains. \nDate : Sunday 14th March\nTimes : 10am-4pm\nLocation: Birkenhead\nCost :  $125-175 (Pay As You Can) \nRegistration : tuimamaki@gmail.com / 021 155 55 82 \nTUi MAMAKi is a vocal performer\, vocal coach and director of ensembles\, born in France\, raised in Aotearoa. She can thank her musically adventurous parents for giving her a taste for sounds from far-away places. In following her voice\, she has travelled to Pay Basque\, India and Bulgaria to study traditional vocal techniques and repertoire. The integration of these tonal\, rhythmic and harmonic lineages\, are found in her original compositions\, and in her facilitation of workshops and ensembles. She led the Medena Ensemble through the World Choir Games and collaborations in Bulgaria\, and continues to offer workshops in communities\, festivals and establishments\, often taking traditional material into improvisational realms\, with a particular affinity for polyphony and interesting rhythms. Her flair for languages has developed her unique ear for nuance in vocal tone and its affect. Her multi-cultural heritage places her as a living bridge for vocal arts in today’s Aotearoa/NZ.  More www.tuimamaki.com

SUMMARY:Iron & Wine @ The Powerstation
DESCRIPTION:Known for his deeply burnished vocals\, keen melodic sensibility\, and introspective\, free-flowing lyrical point of view\, Iron & Wine is one of the preeminent artists and collaborators of the first wave of indie folk. Following his most recent EP release of covers\, Making Good Time – a collaboration with Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses)\, and his 2024 full length album Light Verse\, Iron & Wine come to Australia & NZ off the back of a huge US tour with award-winning trio I’m With Her and Seattle favourites Band of Horses. \nFor more than a decade\, Iron & Wine has crafted a body of work spanning seven studio albums\, numerous EPs and singles\, each marked by atmospheric arrangements\, poetic storytelling\, and Sam Beam’s singular voice. From modest beginnings with The Creek Drank the Cradle\, through the rustic beauty of The Shepherd’s Dog\, the bold explorations of Kiss Each Other Clean and Ghost on Ghost\, to the reflective resonance of Beast Epic and the orchestral sweep of Light Verse\, Iron & Wine has earned acclaim for its capacity to move between the hushed and the grand with elegance and emotional clarity. \nIron & Wine will perform solo\, playing stripped back music from his expansive catalogue including songs from latest album Light Verse\, fan favourites from his collaborations with Calexico and I’m With Her\, and the cinematic gems such as the slow dance soundtrack from Twilight.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Reid & Paul Brown @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance featuring Jennifer Reid and Paul Brown trading ballads and broadsides to illustrate the shared cultures of Lancashire and Dundee\, and the song traditions that would have been active in the two cities during the Industrial Revolution. \nLancashire dialect folk singer and broadside balladeer Jennifer Reid moves between worlds with ease. Rooted in archives and oral histories\, her work braids nineteenth-century music with the present: teaching\, performing\, researching\, sharing\, advocating and supporting spaces for memory and making in the tradition. \nThe singer\, who has been described as having irreverent puckish vim\, has worked with industry greats John Cooper Clarke\, Eliza Carthy\, and Shane Meadows amongst others\, and studied at Oxford University\, specialising in the ballad collections of Manchester. Her research has taken her from Venice to Dhaka via New York\, where she asked whether the Industrial Revolution ever really ended. She has spoken on weaving songs in Bangladesh and Manchester\, worked with scientists\, poets\, musicians\, historians and universities and still finds time to sing stories that refuse to be forgotten. \nJennifer is joined by special guest Dundonian folk singer and legend of the Auckland folk scene Paul Brown. Says Jenn of Paul: Paul Brown’s style is brash\, unapologetic and historically accurate. A vocal Scotsman is needed in most every music scene and I’m pleased that Aotearoa can boast of him\, for he is certainly a firebrand and he knows his stuff. \nTo the devotee of union and work song\, Paul Brown is a master of the form. His songs are powerfully moving\, anti war and anti authoritarian\, and his Dundee accent is a pleasure to listen to. Paul comes from a line of strong Dundonian women; so has a direct connection to the nimble-fingered\, hard working\, hard drinking ‘mill lassies’\, who feature prominently in his repertoire. \nPaul believes in celebrating the working classes and using the power of song to change the system. Hel sings with his audience\, not at them\, so singing choruses is compulsory! \nPlease note we do not have eftpos facilities. BYO event.

SUMMARY:Auckland Bluegrass Club Concert Night starring Luthiers' Corner
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to have Luthiers’ Corner (Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie) travel up the motu to play a concert for us at The Nix. \nIt was the early ’70’s and two young men more than ten thousand kilometres apart were being influenced by the folk music that became so popular at that time. Both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie became very involved in the music and the construction (and repair!) of the instruments that were used. As it turns out\, their respective universes were not parallel\, but converging. \nCut to 2019 at the Wellington Folk Festival\, both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie had committed to displaying their luthiery work\, and both were taking part in the festival as performers\, Peter with the Madillionaires and Jack with the Downunderdogs. It was there that both men became aware of the others music\, and the potential that existed between them. \nThey decided to try a short stage performance at the 2023 Mid-Winter Holler\, and were well received.  A few gigs later things are developing nicely\, with the occasional appearance of pedal steel guitar and claw-hammer banjo adding to the core element of two guitar arrangements. The repertoire is ever growing with unique arrangements for songs from artists like Guy Clark\, John Prine\, Woody Guthrie and Norman Blake (to name a few). No telling where things might go from here. \nThere won’t be any floor spots this month \n– Tickets: $20 at the door\n– BYO: Instruments and libations
