SUMMARY:Benjamin Preston @ Rafters
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Preston grew up in Tāmaki Makaurau and spent nearly three decades overseas\, where he discovered Americana and bluegrass while living in Texas. Since then\, he has immersed himself in mandolin\, guitar\, singing and performing—learning by doing and fortunate to play with many musicians in both the US and New Zealand. \nHe is a member of PettyGrass\, a Telluride-born bluegrass band that “grasses up” Tom Petty songs and hopes to bring their act to the Auckland Folk Festival in 2026. Closer to home\, Benjamin is an active supporter of the Auckland Bluegrass Club\, where he has served as President for the past two years. \nHis set features songs from a dozen of his favourite troubadours—including Sturgill Simpson\, Tyler Childers\, Neil Young\, John Prine\, and Lucinda Williams – artists who have shaped his musical journey and the songs he aspires to write and perform.

SUMMARY:Folk Bitch Trio
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne’s alluring Folk Bitch Trio have announced their debut album release tour of New Zealand\, playing headline shows in Auckland\, Wellington & Christchurch. \nNow Would Be A Good Time\, the debut album by Folk Bitch Trio\, tells vivid\, visceral stories. Their music sounds familiar\, and it’s built on a foundation of the music they’ve loved throughout their lives–gnarled Americana\, classic rock\, piquant\, clear-eyed balladry. But the songs are modern\, youthful\, singing acutely through dissociative daydreams and galling breakups\, sexual fantasies and media overload\, all the petty resentments and minor humiliations of being in your early twenties in the 2020s. \nFolk music has a bad habit of being presented as a deathly serious concern. It’s the music you cry to\, it’s overly sacred\, it’s solemnly considered by critic-historians. But Folk Bitch Trio have a shared sense of humour that is embedded deep in their music and that sets it alight\, safe from the self-serious traps of the genre. Now Would Be A Good Time is funny and darkly ironic in the manner of writers like Mary Gaitskill or Otessa Moshfegh. On “Gods A Different Sword” they crack that “My body keeps the score/But if you tell me that you need it/I can get up off my floor\,” a nod to the clichéd\, over-referenced millennial self-help book\, as they wryly sing about sex within earshot of housemates\, and wring sexual innuendo from physics terminology.

SUMMARY:Chris Priestley & The Unsung Heroes @ Pah Homestead
DESCRIPTION:Maybe you’ve never heard of the Taranaki Highwayman\, the ghost of the Vulcan Hotel and the man who conquered the Niagara Falls in barrel\, only to slip to an untimely death on an orange peel in Onehunga… \nPerhaps you’ve always assumed that the most compelling stories from the past come from somewhere else. Spoiler alert – they don’t! \nRight here\, written in the pages of our own New Zealand story is a line-up of characters up there with any gunslinger from the Wild West: heroes and villains\, do-gooders and ne’er-do-wells\, high-flyers and low-lifers – we’ve got more than our share. \nIt’s said the past informs the present\, but how many of us know of\, or were even taught of the characters who make up our own past and who helped shape who we’ve become? Not just the great and good but those with dirt under their nails and blood on their hands; the sinew and gristle of our backstory. \nBringing it to life with a bang is the travelling ensemble ‘Unsung Heroes’ live at the Pah Homestead.

SUMMARY:Tim Freedman
DESCRIPTION:Tim Freedman is the lead singer\, songwriter and pianist of legendary Australian folk rock group The Whitlams. He will perform the best of his renowned nine album repertoire with pedal steel and electric guitarist Ollie Thorpe. \nSince 2022 a reinvigorated Freedman has led The Whitlams in a resurgence\, touring heavily and releasing two new albums “Sancho” (2022) and the Americana tinged “Kookaburra” (2024). Between band tours he has started performing smaller country towns in duo mode\, and this piano/pedal steel configuration has developed delicate atmospherics to suit the poignant narratives in Freedman’s songs.
