SUMMARY:Ichiko Aoba @ Bruce Mason Centre
DESCRIPTION:Ichiko Aoba is a Japanese singer\, songwriter\, composer\, and multi-instrumentalist well known in Japan for collaborating with artists like Haruomi Hosono\, Cornelius\, and the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. \nIchiko’s music on the soundtrack of the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening\, and her album Windswept Adan connected with an international audience. Western publications like Pitchfork and The Needle Drop started paying attention as well as fellow musicians abroad\, leading to collaborations and playing alongside artists such as Japanese Breakfast\, Mac DeMarco\, Owen Pallett\, Pomme\, Weyes Blood\, and Black Country New Road. \nNo matter where she performs\, whether it’s an intimate venue\, a huge festival like Big Ears\, or Walt Disney Concert Hall\, the entire room looks on in stunned silence\, hanging on every breath. Ichiko sings in Japanese\, but her delicate voice operates on an emotional frequency that pierces through language barriers and cultural divides.

SUMMARY:Thomas Loefke @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Islands in the North Atlantic\, like Tory Island – the Irish island of legend and myth\, the Hebridean Islands in the Northwest of Scotland or the wild archipelago of the Faroe Islands situated between the Shetlands and Iceland – these are the places where harpist and photographer Thomas Loefke spends a considerable amount of time every year to compose music. Dramatic coastal landscapes\, the wide open space of the Atlantic ocean and the ever changing sky reflect in the pieces of music created there. \nThe tunes are accompanied by photographs Thomas took during his travels to the islands and by a bunch of amazing stories\, a combination which makes this solo program a very entertaining show indeed. \n Thomas learnt his trade in Dublin from Ireland’s leading harp players – Máire Ní Cháthasaigh\, Helen Davies and Áine Ní Dhúill. Since 1984 he has been playing professionally and has won several international prizes\, including first prize at the O’Carolan Harp Festival. He regularly tours with Riverdance-violinist Máire Breatnach\, with Colorado based cello/guitar duo Acoustic Eidolon\, with Faroese fiddle player Angelika Hansen as duo Norðan and as soloist.    \n

SUMMARY:Medena Ensemble - The Daughters Of Orpheus @ Ellen Melville Centre
DESCRIPTION:Aotearoa’s premier Bulgarian Folklore Vocal Ensemble\, lead by Tui Mamaki\, present their new collection of exquisite a capella offerings – carrying song threads from afar\, with a longstanding passion for\, and dedication to\, the craft.\n\nThe Daughters of Orpheus is a vibrant feminine tapestry of traditional Bulgarian song\, where classic choral arrangements rub shoulders with obscure rural treasures\, at times arranged for improvisation. This song cycle is specially prepared for Medena Ensemble’s upcoming collaboration with long standing New York based Bulgarian folklore choir Yasna Voices\, at the renowned Koprivshtitsa Festival\, in Bulgaria this August.\n\nMedena Ensemble invite you to celebrate and to support their inaugural journey to the source of this enchanted mahi.\nOrpheus was said to make music so beautiful that stones would roll\, and trees would uproot\, to be able to follow him and listen… All the women who carry folklore song threads in Bulgaria are deemed to be “The Daughters of Orpheus”.\nWith thanks to the Ellen Melville Centre for their support.\n\nWho are Medena? Be it through classic Bulgarian folklore choir arrangements or obscure rural treasure songs issue of Tui Mamaki’s love affair with Bulgaria and its phenomenal voices\, MEDENA ENSEMBLE explore that compelling vocal tone\, bewitchingly close harmony\, playful odd-meter rhythms and the colourful feminine fabric of a community blend. Medena means “honeyed”! Highlight performances to date include Auckland Folk Festival 2025\, World Choir Games 2024\, VoCo & Unitarian Church in collaboration with Bulgarian Roses 2023.

SUMMARY:Tunks & Cave @ Mo's Bar
DESCRIPTION:Once labelled the Black Sand Diva of Auckland Wild West Coast\, and now a Northland based musical gypsy – songstress Cat Tunks joins her musical partner and co conspirator – the renown NZ guitar virtuoso Craig Cave – for a journey back to the big smoke and an afternoon in the wilds of Federal Street .\n\nThe two have fast been gaining attention since pausing their solo careers and joining up as partners in a love of music & life – bringing together the harmonies of soul\, gospel\, blues and country folk in a musical melting pot – like an acoustic mulled wine straight to the senses.
