SUMMARY:Celtic Ferret @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world where history doesn’t just sit quietly—it belts out tunes and demands a singalong. \nRaiding centuries-old ballads full of rogues\, romance\, and questionable life choices\, Celtic Ferret have firmly planted themselves in the New Zealand folk scene\, popping up at clubs and festivals like musical mischief-makers. \nTheir sound is powered by a frankly suspicious number of instruments—guitar\, mandolin\, flutes\, whistles\, and whatever else they tripped over on the way out the door. \nTo celebrate the season\, Jean and Ian have dusted off a mix of crowd favourites and “oh yeah\, that one!” songs for May Day—so expect a bit of everything\, from the well-loved to the surprising. \nAnd yes\, they will be playing songs you know\, so warm up those vocal cords—it’s not a concert\, it’s a group effort. \nLast seen running amok at ECFC in 2023\, the Ferrets are back and ready to once again raise the roof (and possibly a few eyebrows) with their friends at East Coast Folk Club. \nCasual performers 1st half with featured guest in the 2nd half.

SUMMARY:Jeff Hooton @ The Barebones Acoustic Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Jeff grew up on the North Shore where he learned to play the accordion as a child. The teenage Jeff realized the guitar to be a more desirable instrument at that time\, but he picked up the accordion again in his 30’s to play a variety of American musical styles while living and working in Denver\, Colorado for over 30 years. During that time\, he also played the upright bass for the Aurora Symphony in Denver and other various other ensembles. Since returning to Auckland\, he has formed the band Donnybrook Fair with Todd Wright\, still playing the same accordion that his mother bought for him when he was 10 years old.Jeff believes music is best played with friends\, for friends. He will be bringing a selection of much-loved covers and original songs of Auckland to share with new friends at Barebones. \nEntry $10.00 cash at the doorNo bar\, so it’s BYOTea/Coffee/Cake at 1/2 time – Gold coin donation please

SUMMARY:Hoop @ Stone Oven
DESCRIPTION:Tāmaki Makaurau indie-folk group hoop. return to Devonport this May for a special Stone Oven show\, part of the monthly First Thursday celebrations. \nFollowing their 2025 album Wrap Me Up in Winter\, the band bring their signature blend of emotive song writing\, rich strings\, and genre-spanning folk influences to an intimate live setting. \nAt the heart of hoop. is the song writing partnership of Nick Edgar and Al Baxter. Together with Emily Allen’s soaring string arrangements and the grounded\, intuitive rhythm section of Rusty Knox (drums/percussion) and Glenn Coldham (bass)\, the band weave a textured soundscape of voices\, guitars\, flute\, banjo\, mandolin\, and harmonica. Drawing on influences from Celtic traditions to Americana\, their music feels both timeless and deeply personal. \nMake a night of it with First Thursday’s mix of workshops\, performances\, and more across the village.

SUMMARY:Brenda Liddiard @ Rafters Music Club
DESCRIPTION:Brenda has been writing songs and playing guitar and mandolin since the 1970s. She was born and grew up near London (UK)\, but moved to Australia in 1974\, where she was passionately involved in the environment and anti-nuclear movements\, finding her voice as a writer and performer of protest and campaign songs. Some of these songs have been covered by other artists\, or have appeared in documentary movie soundtracks\, and in the true folk tradition\, they continue to be adapted by new singers\, for different campaigns around Australia.Since moving to New Zealand in 1986\, and meeting her husband\, Mark Laurent\, they have performed regularly together\, touring throughout the country\, and in Australia and the UK\, recording many albums and appearing on radio and TV.Her solo album\, Box of Memories\, was a finalist for the New Zealand Music Awards Best Folk Album in 2013.\n \n“Heart-warming\, heart-centred and heartfelt music sung with truth\, humour\, simplicity\, beauty and authenticity. Brenda says as much\, if not more\, by what she doesn’t say\, as she weaves life-stories that invite you to fill in the gaps with your own experiences.”\nMaria Monet\n\nProgrammeThe first half of the evening brings musicians old and new to warm us up before supper and our main guest/s. We welcome new performers. See Graham at the door if you want to perform\, but you will need to be there before the 8pm start.
