SUMMARY:Auckland Bluegrass Club Concert Night starring Luthiers' Corner
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to have Luthiers’ Corner (Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie) travel up the motu to play a concert for us at The Nix. \nIt was the early ’70’s and two young men more than ten thousand kilometres apart were being influenced by the folk music that became so popular at that time. Both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie became very involved in the music and the construction (and repair!) of the instruments that were used. As it turns out\, their respective universes were not parallel\, but converging. \nCut to 2019 at the Wellington Folk Festival\, both Peter Madill and Jack MacKenzie had committed to displaying their luthiery work\, and both were taking part in the festival as performers\, Peter with the Madillionaires and Jack with the Downunderdogs. It was there that both men became aware of the others music\, and the potential that existed between them. \nThey decided to try a short stage performance at the 2023 Mid-Winter Holler\, and were well received.  A few gigs later things are developing nicely\, with the occasional appearance of pedal steel guitar and claw-hammer banjo adding to the core element of two guitar arrangements. The repertoire is ever growing with unique arrangements for songs from artists like Guy Clark\, John Prine\, Woody Guthrie and Norman Blake (to name a few). No telling where things might go from here. \nThere won’t be any floor spots this month \n– Tickets: $20 at the door\n– BYO: Instruments and libations

DESCRIPTION:Dusty Lands is an acoustic folk quartet based in Whangārei. Blending American folk with their unique Northland campfire style\, Dusty Lands invites you to join them at their first ever performance for an evening of luscious harmonies\, soulful songwriting\, banjos\, mandolins and resonators. \nMother and daughter Val and Leah Land make up two-thirds of the trio Harmony Couch. From their roots in the Hokianga they have been singing ’round the fire as long as they can remember – hymns\, kapa haka waiata\, folk\, pop and more. The last ten years have seen them performing slots at folk clubs\, ceilidhs\, Irish pub sessions\, Pop-up Folk and the Auckland Folk Festival. \nThey are joined onstage by tug boat captain and one of the greatest songwriters to emerge from Northland\, Gary Smyth who is currently working on his debut album inspired by artists like Gregory Alan Isakov and Mandolin Orange. Rounding out the quartet is his (distant) \ncousin\, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dusty Burnell. Winner of the Tui folk award twice as a member of both T-Bone and The Frank Burkitt band\, Dusty is a familiar face on stages throughout Aotearoa.

DESCRIPTION:Doug Robertson has been playing music professionally as a hired gun on Auckland’s Jazz\, Rock and Folk scenes since 2015. His skill with a 6-string guitar is matched by his inventiveness as an improviser\, flowing like a juggler in trance\, where the trick has no sleeve. Doug’s musical journey has made him an initiate of a wide variety of musical traditions\, from Stoner Rock and Doom Metal to Gypsy Jazz\, Indian Classical Music\, Bluegrass\, Folk\, Pop and Blues. His love of stringed instruments has seen his playing style develop in a way that blends technique and tonality from one instrument and genre to the next. \nThere will be floor spots in the first half for members and Doug will play the second half.

DESCRIPTION:Hannah Morrell is originally from Lutruwita/Tasmania and has travelled the world in folk\, punk\, and folk-punk bands for the past 15 years\, before following her heart and landing in Aotearoa. Hannah’s refreshing take on folk comes from honest reflections from her life and experiences. Most recently she has supported John Craigie and Beans on Toast\, and played violin with Fables\, Greta O’Leary\, The Dead Maggies (Aus)\, and Claire Anne Taylor (Aus). Hannah’s sense of humour combined with her rollicking singalong banjo originals are not to be missed. Backing her for this performance will be Chris Dent (of Albi & the Wolves) on guitar and “doo-wops”. \nPete Parnham will be emceeing for the night\, and will wrangle those talented folks who would like to share a couple of songs in the first half.  Promises to be a great night all round!
