SUMMARY:Beverly & Al Young @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Beverley and Al Young have been leading figures in New Zealand folk and acoustic music for longer than they like to think about. At the core of their repertoires are Beverley’s British and Irish traditional music and Al’s blues\, but between them they cover a wide range of acoustic and roots styles\, accompanying themselves on a range of instruments that includes guitar\, autoharp\, steel guitar and dulcimer. Beverley and Al have each won NZ Folk Album of the Year awards\, and have performed together and separately at top festivals in New Zealand and Australia\, and at events in England and the United States.

SUMMARY:Celtic Ferret @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Step into a world where history doesn’t just sit quietly—it belts out tunes and demands a singalong. \nRaiding centuries-old ballads full of rogues\, romance\, and questionable life choices\, Celtic Ferret have firmly planted themselves in the New Zealand folk scene\, popping up at clubs and festivals like musical mischief-makers. \nTheir sound is powered by a frankly suspicious number of instruments—guitar\, mandolin\, flutes\, whistles\, and whatever else they tripped over on the way out the door. \nTo celebrate the season\, Jean and Ian have dusted off a mix of crowd favourites and “oh yeah\, that one!” songs for May Day—so expect a bit of everything\, from the well-loved to the surprising. \nAnd yes\, they will be playing songs you know\, so warm up those vocal cords—it’s not a concert\, it’s a group effort. \nLast seen running amok at ECFC in 2023\, the Ferrets are back and ready to once again raise the roof (and possibly a few eyebrows) with their friends at East Coast Folk Club. \nCasual performers 1st half with featured guest in the 2nd half.

SUMMARY:Zonnis @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Canada’s rugged west coast\, Zonnis (Andrea & Adam Zonnis) fits into any setting where music lovers are set to listen. Drawing upon their years of traveling and touring\, their music takes you on a journey through upbeat and inspirational to somber and introspective\, all with a healthy dose of humor thrown in for good measure. \nWhile never hesitating to poke fun at the world around us\, Zonnis rides the line to stay within enough boundaries that it can be enjoyed by folks of all walks of life. Styles range from traditional folk to bluesy rock\, with a bit of funk and soul tossed in as well. \nAndrea and Adam love to visit exotic and foreign lands\, and will go anywhere the music takes them. They especially love outdoor music festivals\, and participate in every way possible\, by dressing up for the party and bringing their uplifting good natures with them wherever the winds of fate deliver them. \nCasual performers 1st half with featured guest in the 2nd half.

SUMMARY:Micheal Young @East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Micheal Young became obsessed with the guitar at the age of 18\, inspired by the likes of James Taylor\, Neil Young\, Led Zeppelin\, Joe Walsh\, Chet Atkins and the Beatles. A few years later he latched on to the progressive fusion music of The Tony Rice Unit\, David Grisman Quartet\, Tony Trishka with Skyline\, and New Grass Revival and added a mandolin to his toolkit. His love for vocal harmonies has grown from his participation in the New Zealand bands “Wires & Wood”\, “Too Far Gone”\, “ReInTarNayShun” and “Rainberry Pie”\, as well as his album of duets “Double Helix”. Along the way he became a successful recording engineer\, producing two Tui award winning albums. After honing his skills on upright bass he became a founding member of the up and coming folk/rock/soul band “Albi & The Wolves” which is keeping him very busy at the moment. \nMicheal will be joined by Ded Mackenzie on vocals\, David Blackman on violin\, Cathy Dyer on bass and Miles Shephard on mandolin.

SUMMARY:Thomas Loefke @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Islands in the North Atlantic\, like Tory Island – the Irish island of legend and myth\, the Hebridean Islands in the Northwest of Scotland or the wild archipelago of the Faroe Islands situated between the Shetlands and Iceland – these are the places where harpist and photographer Thomas Loefke spends a considerable amount of time every year to compose music. Dramatic coastal landscapes\, the wide open space of the Atlantic ocean and the ever changing sky reflect in the pieces of music created there. \nThe tunes are accompanied by photographs Thomas took during his travels to the islands and by a bunch of amazing stories\, a combination which makes this solo program a very entertaining show indeed. \n Thomas learnt his trade in Dublin from Ireland’s leading harp players – Máire Ní Cháthasaigh\, Helen Davies and Áine Ní Dhúill. Since 1984 he has been playing professionally and has won several international prizes\, including first prize at the O’Carolan Harp Festival. He regularly tours with Riverdance-violinist Máire Breatnach\, with Colorado based cello/guitar duo Acoustic Eidolon\, with Faroese fiddle player Angelika Hansen as duo Norðan and as soloist.    \n

SUMMARY:Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:For three decades Mark Laurent and Brenda Liddiard have been performing together – ‘indie’ musicians who fly just below the commercial radar\, playing grass-roots\, mostly unplugged music throughout New Zealand\, Australia and the UK. \nMark plays the blues like his life depends on it! His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals and confirms the guitar hero status that he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970’s. \nBrenda Liddiard has a voice born of folk\, protest and alt country sentiments. Brenda has been influenced by English and American acoustic music and found her niche as a songwriter during her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear issues in the 70’s and 80’s. Her album\, Box of Memories\, was a finalist in the 2013 Tui Awards for Best Folk Album. \nMark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate\, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well-travelled.

SUMMARY:Penni Feather @ East Coast Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Penni performs across many genres\, but folk and acoustic blues are the well-spring she loves to return to. Expect contemporary folk\, originals and acoustic blues\, maybe some trad – in performances that wrap deceptively simple accompaniment around her heartfelt and wide-ranging vocals. \nPenni has been actively involved in the folk scene at various times. She featured on the Auckland Acoustics album with her then trio\, Siren\, and backing Mahinaarangi Tocker\, with whom she also performed. Later she was a full time singer in Auckland\, then Queenstown\, including fronting Auckland band Working Holiday with harmonica maestro Brendan Power. \nIn the last couple of decades she has guested at Wellington\, Hamilton and Aongatete folk festivals (and co-produced a small folk/acoustic festival for several years). She has played at Cafe 121 and opened shows for Annie Crummer\, Darren Watson and Midge Marsden. Last year’s highlights were solo spots at the Raglan Blues Festival and her one-woman show in the Hamilton Arts Festival. She’s looking forward to her first ever visit to East Coast Bays Folk Club!
