SUMMARY:Jennifer Reid & Paul Brown @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance featuring Jennifer Reid and Paul Brown trading ballads and broadsides to illustrate the shared cultures of Lancashire and Dundee\, and the song traditions that would have been active in the two cities during the Industrial Revolution. \nLancashire dialect folk singer and broadside balladeer Jennifer Reid moves between worlds with ease. Rooted in archives and oral histories\, her work braids nineteenth-century music with the present: teaching\, performing\, researching\, sharing\, advocating and supporting spaces for memory and making in the tradition. \nThe singer\, who has been described as having irreverent puckish vim\, has worked with industry greats John Cooper Clarke\, Eliza Carthy\, and Shane Meadows amongst others\, and studied at Oxford University\, specialising in the ballad collections of Manchester. Her research has taken her from Venice to Dhaka via New York\, where she asked whether the Industrial Revolution ever really ended. She has spoken on weaving songs in Bangladesh and Manchester\, worked with scientists\, poets\, musicians\, historians and universities and still finds time to sing stories that refuse to be forgotten. \nJennifer is joined by special guest Dundonian folk singer and legend of the Auckland folk scene Paul Brown. Says Jenn of Paul: Paul Brown’s style is brash\, unapologetic and historically accurate. A vocal Scotsman is needed in most every music scene and I’m pleased that Aotearoa can boast of him\, for he is certainly a firebrand and he knows his stuff. \nTo the devotee of union and work song\, Paul Brown is a master of the form. His songs are powerfully moving\, anti war and anti authoritarian\, and his Dundee accent is a pleasure to listen to. Paul comes from a line of strong Dundonian women; so has a direct connection to the nimble-fingered\, hard working\, hard drinking ‘mill lassies’\, who feature prominently in his repertoire. \nPaul believes in celebrating the working classes and using the power of song to change the system. Hel sings with his audience\, not at them\, so singing choruses is compulsory! \nPlease note we do not have eftpos facilities. BYO event.

SUMMARY:Sammy Leary & Jeff Hooton @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Sammy Leary breathes life into the forgotten corners of our country’s musical past. A collector and archivist as well as a performer\, he unearths the oft-neglected songs that tell the stories of our colonial past. His performances remind us who we once were: settlers\, sailors\, outsiders and dreamers – so we can better understand who we are today.\nAs a passionate custodian of New Zealand’s folk tradition\, ANZFA kiwiana award winner Sammy proves that our own songs can be as rich\, wild and compelling as any in the world.\n\nJeff Hooton is an accordionist\, singer and songwriter who shares his time between Denver\, Colorado\, where he plays in bands Apolkalypse Now and Paddy Hooligan\, and Auckland\, where he plays alongside Todd Wright and Marc Colenso in fêted Irish folk-punk band Donnybrook Fair. Jeff is an engaging and extremely likeable performer who has become a great friend of Sammy’s since they first met at the Irish session at the Clare Inn on Dominion Road.\nJeff believes that music is best played with friends\, for friends. He will be bringing some of those friends with him to the Ōmiha Memorial Hall to share a section of original songs and much-loved covers with new friends in Rocky Bay.

SUMMARY:Donnybrook Fair & Sammy Leary @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:A very special December double bill featuring the amazing Donnybrook Fair + our very own Sammy Leary! Donnybrook Fair are energetic\, charismatic and very talented musicians who are in very high demand. They perform punk infused English/Irish folk\, reminiscent of The Pogues and The Dubliners – just the thing for a festive hootenanny. Expect a high-energy fusion of traditional melodies and fast-paced rhythms and songs filled with stories of love\, rebellion\, and celebration.\n\nSammy Leary performs traditional and original music often with strong New Zealand themes\, but also from the broader folk traditions of Ireland\, Britain and the USA. Performing with a varied range of instruments from the banjo to the bones to the concertina and the musical saw\, and of course the unaccompanied voice\, with Sammy’s enormous repertoire\, each performance is different\, but as always – you’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, you’ll learn something obscure about NZ history and you will become a communist.

SUMMARY:Paul Brown @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Paul Brown has been agitating the Auckland folk scene for the past 13 years since his arrival in Aotearoa. Hailing from Dundee in Scotland\, Paul has a vast store of Scottish urban working-class songs and believes in using the power of song to change the system and celebrate the working class. If the world had it’s priorities in order this man would be world famous\, but until that happens\, you get to hear him at our wonderful wee Ōmiha Memorial Hall! Support will come from the infamous (in the NZ folk scene) Noel Armstrong. Paul and Noel have sung together at parties\, funerals\, sessions\, and other imbibulous gatherings. On this occasion Noel is delighted to support his collaborator and near neighbour on a return trip to the island. With a shared passion for traditional music\, in particular acapella singing\, Paul and Noel are foundation members of the Tradition Bearers monthly singing session in Auckland. Noel\, as part of the Kiwi Scots diaspora\, has a store of humorous Scots songs leavened by Kiwi and English trad renditions.

SUMMARY:Fats White\, Appaloosa Willie & Solomon Cole @ Ōmiha Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:The folk club kicks off the season with something a little different from our usual fare: a one-night only special edition of weird folk\, country\, and blues\, hosted by the irrepressible Sammy Leary and featuring local legends Fats White\, Appaloosa Willie\, and Solomon Cole.\n\nFats White is a celebrated icon of the Aotearoa underground and an extraordinary multimedia artist long revered by the old guard of the Auckland music scene. Fats\, who has described himself as “a persimmon-eater living in the seasons of a pretty complicated world\,” performs self-penned songs on the ukulele that resist classification\, but could be considered part punk\, part outsider folk\, and all carnivalesque showmanship. His work seems to spring from a deep well of primal weirdness\, and those who appreciate the weirder side of folk will recognise the dark humour and surreal artistry in his work\, which has been likened to a cross between Captain Beefheart\, Jim Morrison\, and Tom Waits.\n\nGerry Moran\, aka Appaloosa Willie\, plays outlaw country with a sound that recalls the greats from Hank Williams to Hasil Adkins\, but as an island dwelling bushman\, he doesn’t seek to imitate. Think slide guitar played through a blown-out amp on a Rocky Bay front porch and a style characterised by an irreverent\, anti-establishment attitude\, hard-living lyrics and rhythms like boots on a wooden floor.\n\nSolomon Cole is a genre-defying blues artist known for a sound that embraces the spirit of Howlin’ Wolf and owes a debt to the great Mississippi bluesmen Son House and R.L. Burnside. Cole’s career has been built on soul-drenched storytelling and primal\, foot-stomping blues. Fans can expect a back-to-basics\, (mostly) unplugged performance folk club appearance\, featuring Facu Fuentes on percussion and backup vocals from the talented Nikki Ngātai.\nThis is an all ages\, all walks of life-friendly show!\n\nThis year\, the folk club have dedicated 10% of the season’s proceeds to Ngā Purapura Akoranga\, Waiheke Island’s reorua / bilingual unit at Te Huruhi Primary School\, who do amazing mahi nurturing young te reo speakers in our community.

SUMMARY:Jennifer Reid @ Rocky Bay Folk Club
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Bay Folk Club are thrilled to present ethnomusicologist and performer of 19th century Lancashire dialect and Victorian street ballads\, Jennifer Reid.\n\nFolk music has lost its way\, and people have lost track of their geographical heritage. The working classes made music as a provocation and this is a tradition Jennifer continues: think rousing songs and passionate oratory.\nThe singer and researcher began her career volunteering at Cheatham Library and the Working Class Movement Library in Manchester. Following this time Jennifer completed an advanced diploma in Local History at Oxford University.\nShe researches 19th century music to educate students from primary to university level; perform the songs and stories live; develop talks\, seminars and traditional craft workshops for history and community groups; and contribute academically to the field with funded research and artistic projects.\n\nHer work has taken her to Venice\, Croatia\, New York and lately Bangladesh\, where she tested the idea that the Industrial Revolution never stopped\, it just moved to Dhaka. She spoke at the first ethnomusicology conference on the Indian sub-continent about her research into Bangladeshi and Mancunian weaving songs.\nJennifer has recently supported Eliza Carthy\, John Cooper Clarke\, and Pulp\, and in April brings her one-woman show to Auckland.\n\nTickets $20 via undertheradar or can be booked in advance by emailing rbfcwaiheke@gmail.com\, regretfully we cannot respond to emails and messages sent on the same day as the event.

SUMMARY:Sacred Harp Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Harp is a tradition of sacred choral music that originated in New England and was later perpetuated and carried on in the American South. The name is derived from The Sacred Harp\, a ubiquitous and historically important tune book printed in shape notes. The work was first published in 1844\, and revised editions are still used today in pockets of the South where “Sacred Harp singings” are an unbroken tradition\, and by people across the country who have come to the tradition in the last couple of decades. Nowadays there are many thriving groups of singers across the world\, particularly in the UK\, Ireland and Europe. \nThe new singers observe the practices of southern Sacred Harp groups. The four parts tenor\, bass\, alto\, and treble—face each other to form a “hollow square.” Each singer has a chance to “lead” by standing in the center of the square\, selecting a song or set of songs\, and beating the tempo with up-and-down strokes of the arm. These singings often go on all day and are followed by a shared dinner – though we won’t be going for that long\, this time at least! \nSacred Harp singers can be of many different faiths or none\, but the practice is considered a deeply spiritual experience for many. The workshop is suitable for singers of all levels\, and the more the merrier\, so please bring a friend! We will be guided by visiting singers Inga and Derek Buckland from Bremen\, who will share with us some of the history and the singing of scales and songs. We will follow with a potluck shared lunch. Please join us for what will no doubt be a lovely gathering at the hall with it’s wonderful acoustics! Koha entry as a donation to the OWRS.
